NEW YORK, 27 September 2005 – Colleagues, friends and relatives gathered Tuesday at UNICEF House to celebrate the life of the legendary E.J.R. ‘Dick’ Heyward, a beloved and influential senior statesman for UNICEF for more than 30 years.
Heyward, who retired from UNICEF in 1981, died at the age of 90 in August.
Lauding Heyward as “an intellect of the first order,” UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman said he “helped transform UNICEF from an agency of limited mission to the leading global voice on behalf of the needs of children.”
Heyward was a UNICEF Deputy Executive Director from 1949 to 1981. During his illustrious career, Heyward worked with UNICEF’s first three executive directors.
Other speakers at the gathering included UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Kul
Gautam, UNICEF Representative Ian Hopwood, historian Maggie Black, and Alan
Berg, former senior nutrition adviser World Bank. Heyward’s two sons, Andrew and
Peter, also spoke in honour of their father.
